Gunplay
The secret is out that Dale and I are thinking about getting a weapon for home-protection. With Dale living in Topeka for most of the first four months of the year, I'm thinking about self-defense. What do you think? Do you have a weapon at home, and could you really use it ? Here I am trying out a handgun while at our gun class last weekend. I am not as confident as I look. The instructors were pretty alarmed at how much my hands were shaking the whole time.....

Lori... Just because BTK once worked for ADT doesn't mean that a home alarm is not a good option. I suspect that if you buy a gun and put it under your pillow, the only person that's likely to get shot is Dale.
Since you're seeking opinions... I think this is a terrible option for your home security. The only thing guns bring are trouble.
p.s. Great photo.
Travis: A home alarm system: $2,000 or more. A sleek gun: $400. Of course, Dale's funeral would be about $5,000, so maybe you're right....
well. Lori... If you hadn't spent $2000 on a trip to California wine country, you could now be the proud owner of alarm system.
And if a Dale funeral is only worth $5000, than I see how he rates with you.
My brother gave me a hand gun for Christmas the year of the Carr scum quadruple. He's a gun freak. It's a revolver. It's not loaded and stored in its case high in our closet. I'm fairly certain by the time I got to it and got it loaded, it would be too late if I really needed it.
you're right amy. that gun is doing you no good unloaded and in the closet! but the alternative is not very practical for someone with a small child in the house. at least keep a baseball bat under your bed!
LOVE the photo. Maybe just posting that on your door would be enough to deter any intruders?
p.s. That gun is super sexy, though.
Cute as it is, when I saw that photo, all I could think about is that thing turning up on the TV news or in the Eagle if someone were to accidentally be shot. I agree with Travis...get the home alarm.
Yay, I'm glad others feel this way, too! A good softball bat will only cost you $100! I'll even go to the batting cages with you to teach you a good swing!
you guys are no fun
You've had the training; you have no kids in the house; there's nothing wrong with you owning a gun. Go for it!
thank you amy!
I think learning to use a gun and having one in your home is a fine idea. You're responsible adults; you will keep the gun locked when children are anywhere near. And you're not a hothead who's going to shoot aimlessly the first time you're awakened by some rustling sound in your house. Go for it!
lori, i gotta say that, while i love him like a son, travis is full if s***t. that said, rather than a weiner handgun, you should consider a pistol-grip mossberg 12 gauge shotgun, lovingly named the "Persuader" (see http://www.floridagunworks.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=FG&Product_Code=803&Category_Code=FIREARMS+S+M.)
less than $300, AND you don't need a permit to carry one across state lines.
with a pistol, you had BETTER be a damn good shot before you're gonna stop some hopped-up bad guy as he comes down your hallway in the middle of the night while dale's swilling margaritas in DC. when the fat is in the fire, accuracy, is not an issue with a persuader. the first couple shells can non-lethal (more or less) bird shot, then graduating up to 00 slugs by the third shell, you can shoot through a wall.
the pistol grip makes it easy to handle in tight places, like in your hallway at 3:AM.
almost always, your first one or two shells will be enough to run the bastards off; after that you'll need to take 'em out anyway, along with the 'artwork' on your walls behind them.
a friendly suggestion-

wow. gulp. thanks, skippy. i'm certainly impressed by your expertise. shall we make a date for the shooting range sometime soon to compare notes??
Nothing like handguns to get the comments flowing like cheap wine.
My take: A gun is worth having for peace of mind, even if owners generally fall into two basic groups: those who pull the piece way too early, and those who pull it way too late. Learn how to use the thing, and make sure it's accessible only to you. Should be fine.
